Updates to 360 Degree Safe Cymru - January 2017

Since the launch of the 360 degree safe Cymru tool in October 2014, the take-up of the tool by schools has been excellent and there is evidence from the data held in the tool that online safety practice in schools is improving significantly.

However, technology keeps changing and improving and online behaviours adapt to these new technologies and to other changes in society. To reflect this, in consultation with users  we have been reviewing and updating the 360 degree safe Cymru content and have written some new template policies (Social Media and Mobile Technology).

We have made changes to many 360 aspects and these are now online. Listed below are some of those with the most significant changes:

  • Throughout the tool the term e-safety has been amended to online safety in line with recent practice across the UK.

  • There is now a descriptor for each aspect which will help schools understand the meaning and intention of the aspect

  • Acceptable use – to emphasise developing a culture and knowledge of acceptable use, rather than just having signed pieces of paper.

  • Governors – change of benchmark level from 3 to 2 – to be more consistent with statements in other aspects.

  • Social Media – mainly to reflect changes in the technologies and their use and to emphasise the need for care in the use of SM (particularly staff use) / the need for schools to educate young people in safe and responsible use / the use of SM by the school itself

  • Mobile Technologies – the tool section and the associated Template Policy have been updated in light of the ongoing changes in the use of mobile technologies both in and out of school and the use of school owned technology / BYOD.

  • Technical Security.  We are conscious that there is no effective national source of freely available good practice guidance (and the really good BECTA guidance is out of date). So we have tried to provide more detail in the aspect level wording to help schools. This has increased the detail, but we think it will be helpful.

  • Password Security – as for Technical Security above.

  • Data Protection – change of title from Personal Data – an increasingly important area – again we have increased the detail to help schools. We have also tried to make the levels consistent with the new 360Data Tool being developed by SWGfL.

  • Critical Thinking and Ethics – change of title from Digital Literacy – to reflect (and avoid confusion with) the introduction of the Digital Competence Framework

We would recommend that schools revisit the 360 tool and conduct their review again to ensure that they continue to meet suitable standards of online safety provision – as evidenced through their 360 review – though obviously at a time that fits the school’s normal schedules of review and policy writing.

Template Policies

In addition all Template Policies have been updated, and there are new policies for Social Media and Mobile Technologies. These can be found in the links section of the relevant aspects in the tool, or can be accessed from the Hwb Online Safety Zone.  

Information for schools that have applied for (or are about to apply for) the E-Safety Mark

We do not expect schools that have already applied for the E-Safety Mark, or those who apply until the Easter holidays to necessarily meet the new wording of the benchmark levels – we feel that would be unfair. However, we would recommend schools to look again at their reviews. Schools applying for the E-Safety Mark from April  2017 will be expected to meet the new criteria.
